Collective Studio manufactures shorts in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, from 100 pieces per style and colour: fleece and French terry sweat shorts, jersey and mesh gym shorts, and lounge and sleep shorts, cut and sewn to your pattern in roughly 40–50 days, with GOTS organic cotton under RSC 9687 and DDP delivery. Weight, waistband and inseam are the three decisions.

Collective Studio is a family-run shorts manufacturer in Narayanganj, Bangladesh. Shorts are the jogger's summer twin and the tee's natural partner, and they share the same floor, the same fabrics and the same 100-piece minimum per style and colour. What changes is the proportion: a short uses far less cloth than a jogger, so the waistband, the pocket bag and the hem carry a larger share of the price and of the quality.
Three decisions define a short. The fabric family: brushed fleece or French terry for sweat shorts, cotton or cotton-modal jersey for lounge and sleep shorts, and lightweight jersey, mesh or a performance blend for gym shorts. The weight: sweat shorts sit between 280 and 400 GSM, with 320 to 360 the premium band, while gym and lounge shorts sit between 140 and 220 GSM. The inseam: five inches reads athletic, seven reads casual, nine reads basketball, and the difference is a pattern decision, not a fabric one.
The waistband is where sweat shorts are won or lost. The standard build is a covered elastic waistband with a flat drawcord through metal or embroidered eyelets; a jacquard logo waistband, with the brand name knitted into the elastic, is the upgrade that makes a short look like a far more expensive garment. Gym shorts usually carry a wider, softer elastic with an internal drawcord and a brief liner where the fabric is sheer. Pockets follow the jogger logic: side-seam pockets sit inside the standard price, zipped pockets add a trim and an operation, and a back patch pocket adds one panel.
Two construction details decide whether a short survives a season. Compacting: cotton fleece and terry shrink, so we pre-shrink the fabric mechanically before cutting and wash-test the pre-production sample, so the inseam you sign off is the inseam after washing. Hems: a coverstitched hem lies flat on terry, a folded and topstitched hem suits fleece, and a raw or curved hem is a streetwear choice that needs a stable fabric to avoid rolling. What we make: sweat shorts, gym and training shorts, lounge and sleep shorts, board-style knit shorts for beachwear ranges, and children's shorts, all cut and sewn from your pattern with GOTS-certified organic cotton available under certificate RSC 9687. What we do not make: woven chino, tailored or cargo shorts, which our partner buying house sources as a separate order. A matching set with a hoodie or tee is booked from the same dye lot so the pieces match in daylight.

What moves the price of shorts manufacturing
A short uses less cloth than a jogger, so the waistband, the pockets and the hem carry more of the price than they do on a longer garment.
Fabric family and weight
Fleece and terry are bought by the kilo, so a 360 GSM sweat short carries more cloth than a 180 GSM gym short, and brushing fleece is an extra mill process. Performance blends and mesh for gym shorts price per kilo differently again.
Waistband build
Covered elastic, a flat drawcord and eyelets are three bought-in trims with their own minimums, plus the channel-stitching operation. A jacquard logo waistband replaces the plain elastic with a knitted one and costs a knitting minimum rather than a print run.
Pockets and liners
Side-seam pockets are formed in seams that already exist. Zipped pockets add a zip and an operation each; a back patch pocket adds a panel; a brief liner in a gym short adds a second fabric and its own seams.
Compacting and hems
Pre-shrinking the fabric is charged per kilo before cutting, and the hem finish is an operation: coverstitch, fold-and-topstitch, or a curved hem with a facing each take different minutes on the line.
Colourways and sets
Every colour is its own dye lot and its own 100-piece minimum per style. A short sold as a set with a hoodie or tee has its fabric booked from the same lot, which is worth planning at the start rather than adding later.
Pattern and volume
Grading a short across sizes with inseam options is a one-off cost shared across the order, and a short pattern nests efficiently on the marker, so fabric waste is low and unit price steps down at the usual breaks.
Questions about shorts manufacturing, answered
What is the minimum order for custom shorts?
One hundred pieces per style, per colour, with sizes split freely inside that. The floor exists because fleece, terry and jersey are knitted and dyed in lots; a hundred pieces is roughly where a lot becomes production. A short in two colours is two minimums, and a short sold as a set with a hoodie has both garments' fabric booked from the same lot so they match. Our MOQ calculator shows the totals.
What fabric weight should sweat shorts be?
Between 280 and 400 grams per square metre, with 320 to 360 the premium band most brands settle on: heavy enough to hold a shape, light enough for summer. French terry breathes and dries faster; brushed fleece is softer and warmer. Gym and lounge shorts sit between 140 and 220 GSM in jersey, mesh or a performance blend. Weight is the largest single price lever after colour count.
What inseam should I choose?
It is a pattern decision, not a fabric one, and it changes how the short reads: about five inches is athletic, seven casual, nine basketball-length. We grade with inseam options so you can run two lengths from one pattern. The pre-production sample is wash-tested, so the inseam you approve is the inseam after washing, because cotton fleece and terry shrink if they are not compacted first.
Can you add a liner to gym shorts?
Yes. A brief or boxer liner in a lightweight mesh or jersey is a second fabric with its own seams, so it adds to the price, but it solves opacity on light-coloured performance fabric and is standard on training shorts. We will show you the short on the sample with and without it if you are undecided.
Do you make chino, cargo or tailored shorts?
No. Those are woven garments and our floor cuts and sews knitwear only. Woven shorts are sourced through our partner buying house, CMB Sourcing Ltd, in the same industrial area, as a separate order with its own contract. Send us the whole range and we route each part to the right floor.
Can I get organic cotton shorts?
Yes, GOTS-certified under certificate RSC 9687, which you can check in the GOTS public database. Organic French terry and fleece are available across the sweat-short weights, with a transaction certificate for your order when a retailer or marketplace asks for one. Certified fabric carries a price premium worth budgeting for at quote stage.
