Do you manufacture clothing in New Zealand, or just ship there?
We ship there — we're not a New Zealand production facility. Collective Studio manufactures in our own factory in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, and produces for New Zealand brands, shipping DDP directly to you. If you specifically need production inside New Zealand itself, we're not the right fit, and we'd rather say that plainly than let the confusion sit. If what you're after is a reliable, currently duty-free sourcing route for a New Zealand brand, that's exactly what we do.
Do I pay import duty on clothing from Bangladesh to New Zealand?
Currently, no. Bangladesh has held duty-free access to New Zealand under the country's own Least Developed Country preference scheme since 1 July 2001, so apparel enters at 0% duty rather than New Zealand's standard rate, which runs up to 10%. That's a New Zealand-specific arrangement, separate from what the EU, UK or Canada offer, and it's one of the longer-running schemes among the markets we ship to. New Zealand's 15% GST still applies regardless of duty, and we ship DDP so that figure is inside your landed cost before you commit. If your classification is unusual, confirm the current rate for your specific HS code with New Zealand Customs.
What happens to this duty-free access when Bangladesh graduates from LDC status?
New Zealand officials have publicly and repeatedly reaffirmed their intent to continue duty-free market access for Bangladesh after the scheduled 24 November 2026 graduation date, though that's a stated political commitment rather than a codified scheme with fixed terms, unlike the UK's DCTS Enhanced Preferences tier. There's also a live UN process that may push the actual graduation date to 24 November 2029 — the UN Committee for Development Policy has recommended the deferral and it was unanimously forwarded to the General Assembly in July 2026, with a final vote expected before the original date. We're stating both facts plainly rather than picking the more convenient one: as of today, current access is duty-free, and both the graduation timing and New Zealand's post-graduation stance are live questions we'll keep this page current on.
How much GST will I pay, and who's responsible for it?
15% of the customs value, charged by the New Zealand Customs Service at the border — this applies regardless of the duty question above. On 500 tees at a $6.00 landed cost ($3,000), that's $450. Formally, the importer of record carries the GST liability, typically you or your New Zealand entity, not us — but we ship DDP, so GST is calculated and folded into the price we quote before you commit, and we handle clearance rather than leaving you to settle it at the border. Note that from 1 April 2026 New Zealand also introduced a small Low-Value Goods levy on consignments valued at NZD $1,000 or less; for a genuine wholesale order this rarely applies, but we'll flag it if it does.
What's your minimum order?
One hundred pieces per style, per colour — the same floor as every market we ship to. For a New Zealand first order, most brands land on three to five hundred pieces across two or three styles, enough to justify a proper production run without the per-colour split working against you: three hundred tees in one colourway is a single fabric and dye lot, while a hundred each in three colours is three separate lots and prices accordingly. Since duty currently isn't a factor in your New Zealand landed cost, the main variable to plan around is the 15% GST on top of the manufacturing cost.
How long does delivery to New Zealand take?
Sampling takes about ten days, bulk production forty to fifty days once the pre-production sample is approved, then freight on top. Sea freight typically adds three to five weeks depending on the destination port (Auckland or Tauranga are the common entry points) and is the cost-effective choice once a style is proven. Air freight adds roughly seven to ten days door to door and suits a launch date or a first order where speed matters more than cost. We ship DDP either way, so GST and clearance at the border are handled on our side, and you receive one landed cost and one delivery.
