Clothing Manufacturer for Malaysian Brands

We ship there — we're not a Malaysian production facility. Collective Studio manufactures in our own factory in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, and produces for Malaysian brands, shipping DDP directly to you. Our founder Jashim Uddin did run a garment warehouse in Malaysia from 2013 to 2017, so the market isn't unfamiliar to us, but the actual manufacturing happens in Bangladesh. If you specifically need production inside Malaysia itself, we're not the right fit, and we'd rather say that plainly than let the confusion sit.

Knitted apparel — the category most tees, hoodies and sweats fall into — carries an average 14.5% duty under Malaysia's standard MFN tariff schedule, though the exact rate depends on your product's specific HS code within that chapter. We haven't found documented evidence of a Malaysia-specific duty preference for Bangladesh as a least-developed country, unlike the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Norway or New Zealand, all of which do grant one — so we quote the standard MFN rate rather than assuming a discount we can't point you to. If you believe a preferential rate genuinely applies to your product, we'd rather you confirmed it directly with Royal Malaysian Customs (JKDM) and we'll help you check, than take our word for a number that might be wrong.

Malaysia's Sales and Service Tax, reintroduced in 2018, applies a sales tax to most goods at the point of import or domestic sale. Standard goods, apparel included, sit in the 10% bracket — a smaller 5% bracket applies to certain essential and near-essential goods, which general fashion apparel doesn't qualify for. SST is charged on the duty-inclusive value, not just the product price, so it compounds with duty rather than sitting alongside it. Worked through on 500 tees at a $6.00 landed cost ($3,000 total): duty at 14.5% is $435, and SST at 10% of the duty-inclusive value ($3,435) is $343.50 — a total of $778.50, or roughly 26% on top of the base cost.

We haven't been able to confirm one, and we'd rather tell you that honestly than assume a discount that isn't real. Several of the markets we ship to — the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Norway and New Zealand — have well-documented GSP-style schemes granting Bangladesh duty-free or reduced-duty access as a least-developed country. We could not find equivalent documented evidence for Malaysia specifically. That doesn't mean no preference exists — Malaysia's tariff schedule runs to thousands of HS codes and our own research has limits — so if your product might qualify, the right move is confirming directly with Royal Malaysian Customs (JKDM) rather than trusting a number on a website, ours included.

One hundred pieces per style, per colour — the same floor as every market we ship to. For a Malaysian first order, most brands land on three to five hundred pieces across two or three styles, enough to justify a proper production run without the per-colour split working against you: three hundred tees in one colourway is a single fabric and dye lot, while a hundred each in three colours is three separate lots and prices accordingly. Given the roughly 26% combined duty and SST on a typical order, the number worth planning around is the full landed cost, not just the factory price.

Sampling takes about ten days, bulk production forty to fifty days once the pre-production sample is approved, then freight on top. Sea freight is comparatively fast given the shipping lanes between the Bay of Bengal and the Strait of Malacca, typically landing at Port Klang within two to three weeks of leaving Chattogram. Air freight adds roughly four to six days door to door and suits a launch date or a first order where speed matters more than cost. We ship DDP either way, so duty, SST and clearance at the border are handled on our side, and you receive one landed cost and one delivery.
