How to Vet a Clothing Factory for Large Orders

When you're committing tens of thousands of units and a serious deposit, choosing the wrong factory isn't a setback — it's a season lost. Vetting at scale goes well beyond "can you make this?" Here's the checklist experienced sourcing teams use.

Capacity — can they actually handle your volume?

Ask how many production lines they run, their monthly output for your product type, and how your order fits alongside their existing commitments. A factory that wins your order then can't schedule it has helped no one. Be specific about your peak months.

Compliance & certifications

Large buyers and retailers expect audited factories. Ask for current social compliance audits (Amfori BSCI, Sedex/SMETA, or WRAP) and any product certificates you need (GOTS, OEKO-TEX). Don't take a logo on a website as proof — ask for the certificate and its expiry date.

Track record & references

  • Who do they currently produce for at your volume, and for how long?
  • Can they show production photos, not just stock imagery?
  • Will they connect you with an existing client as a reference?

Financial and operational stability

A factory carrying your fabric and labour costs needs to be stable. Length of operation, ownership, and whether they own their facility are all signals. A video walkthrough or in-person visit tells you more in ten minutes than weeks of email.

Real factories are happy to show you the floor. Brokers posing as factories get vague the moment you ask to see it.

Red flags

  • Prices far below everyone else — someone is cutting a corner you'll pay for later.
  • No clear answer on MOQ per style and per colour.
  • Reluctance to share compliance documents or a live factory tour.
  • Slow, unclear communication before you've even paid.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a clothing factory is legitimate?

Ask for a live video walkthrough of the floor, current compliance audits (BSCI, Sedex/SMETA or WRAP), client references, and a sample. Real factories share these readily; brokers posing as factories get vague.

What certifications should a clothing factory have?

For most buyers, a social compliance audit (Amfori BSCI, Sedex/SMETA or WRAP) plus any product certificates you need, such as GOTS for organic or OEKO-TEX. Always check the certificate's expiry date and scope.

What are the red flags when choosing a manufacturer?

Prices far below everyone else, no clear MOQ per style and colour, reluctance to show the factory or share compliance documents, and slow, vague communication before you've even paid.
